Your ECM system can connect with databases and other sources to extract documents and data for tasks, measurement, and management. Or it can disconnect you from all that. Connect or disconnect? Choose Wisely.

Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day…

Avoid the excuses that could ruin your ECM project.

It’s fair to say that sometimes you wake up in the morning and simply know that things aren’t going to go your way that day. Like in the children’s classic, Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Alexander comments right from the start of the day, “I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.” And, things never looked up for him straight through until bedtime.

Then, there are other days that we create the bad day ourselves simply by conjuring up excuses for why it couldn’t possibly be a good day. We actually sabotage our chances of having a good day.

There are plenty of companies that do the same thing when it comes to implementing an enterprise content management (ECM) system. The article, Are You Sabotaging your ECM Conversion? Common Excuses that Guarantee Loss of Revenue, summarizes the top excuses companies use to avoid ECM…and some information to help dispel them:

  • ECM is too expensive. We can’t afford it right now. - There are pricing options available that you may be unaware of (no matter what your size), such as subscription pricing - which offers a monthly fee. And between the cost savings and the cost avoidance you achieve from ECM, your ROI can emerge very quickly. ECM may seem expensive; but when was the last time you calculated the cost of not implementing ECM?
  • ECM is too complex. - Actually, it’s simplifies things. Imagine where your business processes would be if you hadn’t made a transition to email. Or to a contemporary computing system. At some point, you made an investment in time, hardware, and possibly training in order to take advantage of advanced technology.
  • We tried to implement ECM previously and we weren’t successful. - Learn from your failures, and then move on. Find a vendor who takes the time to truly understand your business processes-this is critical for success.
  • We don’t want to make any dramatic changes to our current business processes. - Fear of change can be a powerful deterrent. It’s comfortable to stay with the status quo. But don’t fear ECM. Fear a volatile economy that may affect the spending habits of your customers. Fear your competitors, who most assuredly are going to take advantage of this technology. Fear the inefficiencies and slowdowns that are inevitable results of prolonging a transition. Change is good.

Read the entire article for more information on common excuses and ways to keep them from forcing you into a “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.”

Bottom line:

Make sure your company isn’t sabotaging its own success by relying on excuses for not implementing an ECM system. Just because your company isn’t ready to make the transition, doesn’t mean that your competitors haven’t already. Stop standing in the way of your own success.
