Tag! You’re It…
Use BPM to eliminate the games in your business processes.
Came across a quote from Malcolm Forbes the other day that read, “If you don't know what to do with many of the papers piled on your desk, stick a dozen colleagues' initials on 'em, and pass them along. When in doubt, route.”
Kind of brings back childhood images of playing tag. With a simple, “Tag…You’re It!”, it was someone else’s responsibility to chase after everyone…you could simply run away.
It’s nice to think about that as a childhood game, but not when it comes to getting work done within your organization. The “Tag…You’re It!” concept simply won’t cut it. And, as easy as the quote from Malcolm Forbes makes it sound, just routing work to someone else because you don’t want to deal with it, isn’t getting anyone anywhere.
The article, Don’t Put It Off Any Longer: End Workplace Procrastination NOW with BPM addresses best practices for routing work. It describes many of the procrastination issues faced by organizations of all shapes and sizes and explains how automating work with business process management (BPM) and workflow can help:
- Keep the right projects on top – Process automation means workers no longer have to think about what’s next. Work must be—and is—handled in the order you determine, 100% of the time.
- Make sure nothing’s left out – Use BPM to make certain all tasks pertaining to a job are followed according to the rules and in the right order.
- Enforce consistency and fairness – Whether an employee gives preferential treatment to certain customers, chooses some tasks over others, or simply isn’t consistent, BPM levels the playing field. Every job, task, customer, and staff member is treated exactly the same way.
- Assess productivity – Workflow reporting gives managers unobtrusive insight into work volumes, departmental productivity, bottlenecks, the ability of staff to meet deadlines and keep up with projects, and more.
- Make changes on the fly – BPM and workflow reporting gives you an extra set of eyes, allowing you to move work and employees into streams of activity that suit them best.

Bottom line:
Procrastination is often part of human nature. But, constantly routing work to a colleague’s inbox with a “Tag…You’re It!” mentality isn’t doing your organization any favors. Using BPM and workflow will help you govern work being done, how it’s carried out, who does it, and when.
