Chain Reactions in Workflow...

Get the pieces to fall in your favor.

It’s amazing how sometimes the tiniest event can throw your whole day into a tailspin. You know the scenario – you get a phone call while you’re making dinner and next thing you know the water is boiling over, the pasta is overcooked, and the chicken is burnt to a crisp. Looks like pizza delivery!

Or, there are those one-in-a-million chances where the chain reaction actually moves in your favor. Take, for instance, Greyson Chance, who chose to sing Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi at his high school’s talent show. The performance got picked up on YouTube, noticed by Ellen DeGeneres, and resulted in a record deal all in less than 2 months. Things sure can move fast when the dominoes start to fall!

No doubt technology played a huge part in the second chain reaction example. We all know that technology is tremendously helpful…when it works correctly. But, what happens when it doesn't?

As noted in the article When Workflow Doesn’t Work: A Troubleshooting Guide, “…when your business processes don’t perform up to your expectations, it can create a tumultuous work environment. Business people blame IT; IT blames management; and the vendor claims that the software is working fine.” This obviously could all lead to a chain of nasty events. The article examines a few scenarios that might be taking place within your organization and gives some helpful suggestions. Recognize any of these?

  1. You’ve implemented workflow, but you still have bottlenecks.
  2. You haven’t reduced processing costs.
  3. You have no strategy for handling exceptions.

Bottom line:

Just like a line of dominoes, one tiny bump in the road could set off a chain reaction. What seems like a minor issue with your workflow system could cause major inefficiencies as you try to increase the usage. But, if you’re prepared and have all the glitches worked out before they turn in to problems, perhaps that chain reaction could actually cause the pieces to fall in your favor.
