100% Pure, Grade A Document Management...

Or is it ECM? Or maybe it's BPM?

Now that we have your attention...we'll get to the point. It seems like there's been a lot of discussion lately about the correct terminology for the technology companies like ours provide. Some people call it document management...while others refer to it as enterprise content management (ECM). When you throw in workflow, business process management (BPM), and even records management, you can be left with a confusing list of acronyms.

AIIM President John Mancini humorously points out in his blog post Would a rose by any other name still be this confusing?, "Of course, like any simple term used to describe a complicated set of conditions, those selling solutions in our space attached all sorts of qualifiers and explanations to the ECM label to describe what they were really talking about. All of which has had the effect of baffling many potential customers." 

Ron Miller of Fierce Content Management adds in Why document management is suddenly sexy again, that a "simple" term like "Enterprise Content Management" actually makes it harder for people to understand because it tries to lump too many technologies into one label. 

Getting caught up in all of the terminology is almost like taking that 100% pure, grade A technology and adding lots of fillers and artificial ingredients to it. 

If you're like a lot of others, you aren't really concerned with acronyms - instead, you're more focused on getting technology that actually does what you need it to do. You want a system that is intuitive and easy to use...that allows you to locate and access your documents, simply and effectively. There are many ways to label the technology that your company is looking for. Talk to ten different vendors and they'll probably use ten different technical terms. So, what's a user to do? Only you know the solution your company really needs. Make sure you find a vendor that's willing to offer you a solution to your problem - not just a fancy label for the technology.
