Turning Work into Workflow…

Rather than just more work

Have you noticed how fast houses go up these days? One day it's a hole in the ground, the next - the foundation is up. And before you know it, VOILA! you have a two-story masterpiece ready for move in. That's because they've found faster ways to build. For example, they pre-fabricate the walls and place the windows in an off-site warehouse, then haul them into the building site. Of course, someone came up with that great idea. And how obvious - build in any weather, anytime! It's one of those, "Why didn't I think of that?" ideas.

Are you racking your brain trying to think of ways to improve your job or your organization? In order to improve how you work, you need to take a step back and evaluate your processes. See what’s working and what’s could help make the process more efficient. Then, re-engineer your processes with workflow or business process management (BPM) to make everything run more smoothly.

Some questions to ask your team when reviewing your existing processes:

  1. Is this process running as effectively as it could be? Are there process slowdown points we can fix that would result in faster customer service or task turnaround time?
  2. What bottlenecks are we facing that could be eliminated with a better process? Are there places within this process where this job could fall apart or get stuck in an infinite loop?
  3. Have we thought through all the possibilities that could occur with this process – are there any variables that we haven’t taken into account? Do we have contingency plans as part of the process to take care of anything out of the ordinary that might pop up?
  4. Are there tasks for which I don’t have a defined process in place? How could defining these undocumented processes improve my employee productivity?

The bottom line

Think about it. Whether your site has five people or five hundred, I bet there are processes you can improve upon.
