Your ECM can integrate the data you need to make decisions about your business, it's direction, and its profitability. Or it can disintegrate into silos and your business will follow. Integrate of Disintegrate? Choose Wisely.

Turning the light on...

Convincing everyone else about the need for ECM.

Have you ever felt really passionate about something? Perhaps you've done a ton of research, gone to industry trade shows, requested fancy marketing collateral, sat through some informational webinars, and created comparison spreadsheets. You know in your heart that an ECM solution is the perfect answer for your company.

So, you take all of your hard work and present it to the decision maker. Now what? How can you convince other people within your organization that ECM is the right move? How can you get the budget and permission to move forward?

Perhaps you need to perform a "gap analysis." According to the article, Gap Analysis: How to Avoid the Common Pitfalls Associated with Change, a "gap analysis is an important tool that can help an organization to evaluate and implement change successfully, which is a necessity in today’s business environment." A properly done gap analysis can help you quantify where your business is today and where you want it to be in the future. This can be invaluable when trying to convince others within your organization.

Then, you need to sell your idea.  As summarized so nicely in the AIIM Knowledge Center Blog posting, The Art of Selling an ECM Project, you need to become the salesperson within your organization. The post explains the methodical steps you should take to "listen, learn, and align" the goals within your organization to your proposed solution.

The bottom line:

It's not always easy to convince others that new software you think the company should purchase will lead to process improvements...even if it is the most brilliant idea. Obviously, you don't want to come across as one of those cheesy infomercial salespeople.  But, by taking a little time to do a gap analysis, communicating with your colleagues about their needs and goals, and ultimately selling everyone on the idea, you will lead your company forward and achieve the best results.

Sometimes it's more effective to use an outsider's perspective when trying to persuade others within your organization of the need for ECM software.
