Do more than keep your fingers crossed...

We’ve all gotten at least a few of those emails – “forward this email to 20 of your closest friends and coworkers or else a plague of a million locusts will descend upon your workplace.” And, we’ve probably all forwarded one or two of them because we just didn’t feel like taking a chance that day. (Who has time to deal with a million locusts anyway?)

Admittedly, that scenario is a little far fetched. But what happens when something completely freakish does happen to your business? What about a natural disaster, employee turnover, or something outside of your immediate control? Do you simply keep your fingers crossed? Or, do you take matters into your own hands, and set up a plan in advance?

Being able to continue with your normal business processes is critical. The article Business Continuity Planning: Ensuring ‘Business as Usual’ When the Unusual Happens features tips for getting started with a business continuity plan (BCP). Some questions you need to be able to answer include:

  • Who are our customers? (Where is this information and what documents/data are associated with each customer?)
  • Are there critical suppliers we need in order to continue our business?
  • What information loss would bring our business to a standstill?
  • What government or industry regulations would be associated with such a shut-down?

Read the full article on business continuity planning.
