Connecting Your Information
Solving the silo conundrum with ECM integration
I read a blog post by Seth Godin regarding his recent trip to the ER. I think we all know where this is going... "Six people doing bureaucratic tasks and screening that are artifacts of a paper universe, all in the service of one doctor (and the need to get paid and not get sued). A 90-minute experience so we could see a doctor for ninety seconds."
He goes on to talk about how the process would have been more efficient and the experience better if everything was done digitally. From admissions to triage to care, electronic content management (ECM) systems integrated with other LOB systems would have improved the experience for everyone involved.
Chances are that your work environment controls information digitally on some level. But, if your systems and silos aren't integrated or accessible across the enterprise, you're hindering efficiency. ECM solutions are designed to help you connect your information.
The article "Systems Integration 101: Getting the Most Return for Your ECM Investment" addresses the challenges associated with integration and how to tackle them with ECM.
- When your LOB systems make it difficult to integrate with other systems, zero programming tools allow you to image enable your LOB applications, allowing your staff to continue to work in their own familiar applications while pushing and pulling information needed from other systems.
- Another option is to seamlessly bridge the gap between applications underwritten in web-services with API's offered by your ECM solution provider, making information available immediately.
Some vendors offer both of these options at no additional cost. Be sure to ask your vendor about fees you may incur.
In addition to integrating with legacy and departmental systems, you can use these tools, and others offered by your vendor, to integrate with your web portals, email and fax software, and other data sources as well, helping to increase efficiency throughout your organization.
Bottom line:
Integration improves the experience for everyone involved. Get started by examining your processes to identify ways integration can increase productivity and better customer service. Then, talk to your vendor about your options.
